October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Attitudes have changed in recent years, and both racism and bullying are on the rise. Bullying is showing up on cyber space since social media sites have become more popular. People offer their comments and opinions, and some are malicious.
Why do kids pick on other kids? Why do adults also harass other adults as well? Sometimes people who bully others are looking for attention, use this behavior due to family influences, or someone else is bullying them, and this causes them to feel powerless themselves. Anger and frustration are also factors. Whatever the reason, bullying is not a behavior we should tolerate.
Bullying victims can feel alone and helpless, which may develop low self esteem. This may lead to suicide and other issues in life. What’s worse is that there is not always someone to help them when bullied. What do people do when they see injustices in public or even online?
In this video, Burger King conducts a social experiment to see what people do when they find out their burger has been bullied and when there is bullying going on at the restaurant. Most customers would stand up to having a burger being battered and get upset and say something. But when witnessing someone being bullied, they may not say something to stop the behavior. There are some people that do get involved; maybe those who have been bullied before are more likely to help. We as a society need to step up and not tolerate this behavior.
